We've Been On A Texas Size Adventure

Last week we took our first road trip exploring Texas outside the Metroplex area. I know we area crazy to do this when gas is so high...but timing is everything!!!

We started our adventure in Waco at the Ranger Museum. It was neat to see all the old law enforcement equipment and badges...if only we could use some of those items now...we might not have all the troubles we have. I would not want to see some of those brass knuckels and things coming at me. There were some guns you could hold...and I could barely lift them with one hand...let alone pull the trigger!!! Good thing no one is counting on me for protection!!

We toured the capital and grounds. Very nice place....more open to the public, and ornate than Californias...Bigger Too...Go FIGURE!!! Then we got caught in a downpour and raced back to take cover in the rotunda of the capital. We saw the evening flight of the bats. Whoa...that was creepy. There are 1-2 million fruit bats that live under the Congress Street Bridge and every night at dark they come out...in droves!!! We watched for about 30 minutes and they were still coming out after we got to our car and drove a few blocks. It is really something to see!!! A guide told us that everyone goes in the evening to see them....but it is also amazing to see them come home at dawn....we are saving that for the next trip!!! Needless to say there should not be any bugs in Austin after they are done feasting for the night!!!

Next we headed down to San Antonio to meet Uncle Chuck, Aunt Terri, Chris and Katie. Our first stop was the Alamo. Wow was it hot and sticky that day. But what an amazing place. Again, so much important history!!! Just an amazing building. We walked almost the entire riverwalk...you know Davis loved that!! We took the riverwalk cruise. We ate at some great places along the riverwalk. We visited one of the many missions. Everyone had a great time.

On the way home we decided we all wanted to see the town that Waylon and Willie made famous years ago.....so we headed to Luckenbach Texas. What a stop that was. Right before we got into "town" we stopped at "uptown Luckenbach" and met the sweetest man who drills pictures into bottles and marble pieces. I think he would give you the shirt off his back if you asked. We walked out with souvenir bottles, post cards, and peaches plus the stuff we bought. Then it was on to the big stop of Luckenbach...It is an old post office....now a gift shop with a bar in the back!!! There is one house and a dance hall and outside stage area (I guess you could call it a stage). Its all about the party in Luckenbach. They had just recently celebrated Waylon's b-day there....bet that was a night!!

Then we came back here and toured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing...where they make $$$$, the stock yards, and Billy Bobs. We wanted to do more...but time was short and everyone was pretty pooped after all we had done. So, we cooked out, had gun battles in the front room, played games and just visited. A good time was had by all!!!
