Our California Trip

We took a road trip to California. 2 grannies, Davis and myself in the "Granny Wagon" for an adventure(we had to leave dad at home...there was no more room for him or his golf clubs (HA)...no really he had too much going on at work at the time). I was really not thrilled about driving i-40 for the 30th or so time...been there done that. So I tried to focus on Davis seeing it for the first time with "big kid eyes". So we focused on Route 66 since he loved the CARS movie so much. We counted all the tee-pees and trading posts in New Mexico and Arizona and the Cadillac Stonehenge in Amarillo. Nana led us through her imaginative stories of the Indians coming over the mountain ranges and the cowboys camping near streams and lakes (which almost all seem to be dried up now). We played highway Bingo and Davis watched movies and played with his Leapster while we chatted the time away.

The drive was good except for the wind....it blew from the time we left my house until well past when we arrived in Clovis. It was so bad that in 4 Corners outside Mojave, Ca. the wind caught our passenger side door at a gas stop and nearly blew it off and Nana out of the car!!!! The door hinges were sprung and the door would not close....You can imagine the panic!!! We finally came across a man who pulled up and down on the door and slammed us in (Literally---would not even come open for the shop guys to look at it). So we blew into Clovis with wind noise howling through the car and much stress!! The car was fixed a bit more in Fresno to relieve some of the wind/road noise and to allow us to open & close the door, but they could not totally fix it because it was going to take more than a week to do all the work....gotta love that wind....NOT!!!! Hopefully the car is being fixed back here in Texas as I type this. As bad as it was...we were thankful no one was hurt and that the car was drivable.

We had such a good trip to Clovis!!! We saw so many friends!! I spent an entire day back at Sierra Vista. It did my heart so much good to see former students and their families and reconnect with the teachers. After walking away with no good-bye 2 years ago, it was nice to see and hear that I had touched some lives and made a difference(I think that is something we always question in the teaching profession....am I doing any good?). I made contact with some of my former students who were graduating that week (my first class graduated the week we were there...how cool it that?---man do I feel old). I had lunch with my best friend from Elementary school...Yes we have been friends for 30 years (WOW!!). We attended the graduation party of our sweet little (not any more!!) Angela. We visited Davis' former daycare...they were surprised!!! We met with almost every close friend we had and cruised our old neighborhoods. We ate all the foods we missed the most (IN & Out Burger, El Pollo Loco, Lunas, California Style Mexican food). Davis had some great playdates with his old pals while moms and I visited!!! I had dinner with 2 of my sorority sisters. Mom's Bible study had a fabulous luncheon for us.

We even took a quick side trip to the beach. We were all missing the ocean so much....so we took a quick 18 hour side trip to one of our favorite spots...Cayucos Ca. Davis had a blast digging in the sand, running from the waves, and chasing the birds. He could not really remember all the times he had done those same things before...so that was a lot of fun!

Great trip....now we are settling into our summer. We are off to the library momentarily to get our books for the week (you know me...there is no break from reading!!). I'll be back with updates as fun things happen this summer!!! Go make some memories!!
